New Delhi: Sourav Ganguly’s maiden ton at his home ground in Kolkata’s Eden Gardens was not the only reason for excitement on Saturday morning.

While Team India cruised to a comfortable position in the second test against Pakistan, there was much drama off the field as well.

A Kolkata police officer was caught on camera snatching the National Flag from a cricket fan and throwing it away. The incident took place at the club house entrance gate.

The police officer was taken off duty with effect from Saturday and Kolkata Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakroborty has asked for the relevant footage from TV channels.

“It's an extremely unfortunate incident. Though it is prohibited for supporters to carry any posters, banners or flags inside the lower tier of Club House block as it disturbs the side screen and the batsman on the crease, it does not mean anyone can dishonour the national flag,” Chakraborty was quoted as saying by news agencies.

'We are looking into the matter. Strict action will be taken against the police constable if he is found guilty,' he said.

IANS reports Kolkata Police Joint Commissioner Pradip Kumar Chattopadhyay said they are trying to procure a copy of the footage from private television channels for initiating departmental inquiry against the constable.

He said the constable was removed from duty immediately after the incident was reported.
